  1.    Nerve tissues, highly specialized to 
  2. respond to stimuli, are composed of 
  3. individual cells called neurons and their 
  4. associated support cells called glial cells.  
  5. Neural cells consist of a cell body, which 
  6. contains the nucleus, as well as 
  7. extensions called fibers.  Nerve cells, 
  8. which can measure up to two meters in 
  9. length, are thus well suited to 
  10. transmitting messages from one part of 
  11. an organism to another.  Nerve cells 
  12. convert stimuli into electrochemical 
  13. impulses and transmit the signals down 
  14. their lengths.  Sensory neurons lead 
  15. away from the receptor cells, where a 
  16. stimulus is received, while motor 
  17. neurons lead toward effector cells, 
  18. where a response to a stimulus may be exacted.  
  19. In between sensory and motorneurons may lie 
  20. interneurons.
